This was awesome! My 14 year old scarfed it down. On the shopping list it wasn't as apparent to use the ORIENTAL flavored, so I got the beef flavored Ramen Noodles. I think it would have been better with the Oriental flavoring. The hamburger was so-so...next time I'll make with either chicken or steak, but it was very good and budget-friendly!

I was skeptical when trying this recipe but it was so simple to make so I tried it. Needless to say it tasted AMAZING! My family wolfed it down. Usually we have left overs every night but I've made this twice and there's never any left! Thanks Food on the Table for this fantastic recipe!!!!

I used fresh broccoli with snap peas or jubilee carrots with onions ...I've also seen in the frozen section of grocery a stir fry mix which I might use next time I make this dish.

I used a common frozen vegetable mix- diced carrots, green beans, corn and peas. It worked great!

@Gina~ Monica and Anonymous both have great suggestions on veggies to use in this dish. I also think that simply a bag of frozen peas and carrots would be just fine (especially for a picky eater) or if you have it on hand some fresh red and yellow bell peppers or snap peas would also be nice.

This was thoroughly enjoyed by my house full of teenagers and their friends! It was quick and easy and inexpensive to feed that many hungry mouths! Also could be a great way to use up all the little bits of leftover meats and veggies - Kind of like stir-fry but without as much effort!

SUPER SUPER easy- tasty- it is basically "dressed up ramen noodles" but I have never experimented with ramen until this recipe so was leery of having nightmares about college days and hot pot disasters. This however was tasty and my kids ate it with "minimal complaints" ie...they still wanted to pick out some of the veggies. But I made them eat it all (I am a mean mom that way) It made enough for 2 boys and me to have a bowl (cereal bowl size) each and for my hubby to have probably about 2 bowls worth.

I made this with canned chicken (white meat) I used the juice that came in the can of chicken...after I cooked it I added a can of cream of chicken soup plus 1/2 cup of water and stirred it up. It was delicious that way and very quick...we even used it for soup with crackers and it was good.

FIVE STARS! I needed room in the fridge for Thanksgiving so I used leftover pork loin, cubed; left over fresh green beans, cut; sliced up the 1/2 an onion; left over corn and the bottom of the bag of baby carrots, diced up. I added just a dash of mirin, soy sauce and sesame oil to what the recipe called for. It was a hit. This is definitely going on my "what to do with leftovers" list of recipes.

I actually scrolled past this recipe @ first, but then after going back and reviewing the comments, decided to give it a try...it was PHENOMENAL!!! I used grated ginger and cali. blend veggies. I also added soy sauce and a touch of honey to balance out the ginger flavor. hubby said it tasted just like these noodles we buy at our fav. asian restaurant for $18! (though I think he's exaggerating a bit...) Will def. make again!

What is the serving size? It seems like a TON of fat and cals- I am on a 1600 cal a day diet and am thinking if I eat a smaller portion size then I can do the math when keeping track of the calories.

Hi Anonymous. Please note the disclosure statement located above the nutritional information for this recipe. Since this recipe serves 4, each serving should be roughly 1 cup per person of the final prepared meal. If you wanted to make this dish healthier, use a lean ground beef or ground turkey and discard the Ramen noodle seasoning packets and make a sauce using some fat free beef broth and a touch of low sodium soy sauce.

I was really worried about the sodium intake with the Ramen noodle "flavor packets". We haven't had Ramen noodles since college, so I thought I would give it a try. It was pretty tasty. Next time I may do a little research on the packets and see what flavorings I can add instead.

@Monica, here's a copycat recipe for the Ramen oriental flavor packet: Equal parts onion powder, ground ginger, garlic powder and ground black pepper. Then add salt to taste. For this recipe, I would use 2 teaspoons of each, plus salt to your taste.

You could use can vegetables (green beans, peas, carrots, mixed vegetables) and drain and rinse them before adding to the noodle mixture, use fresh (broccoli, carrots, mushrooms) and partially steam or saute them before adding to the noodle mixture, or you could just leave them out all together if needed.

In my experience, the best veggies for this type of dish are frozen Asian veggies. Or, you could just clean out your fresh veggie drawer and use whatever you have on hand! The best veggies for Asian dishes would include: sugar snap peas, broccoli, water chestnuts (I always keep a can in the pantry), carrots, and onions (any type).

@Anonymous, this should be cooked just until the noodles are tender and the veggies still crisp tender. I would bring the water up to a boil and THEN add the veggies and noodles and cook 3 more minutes. I will edit it to reflect this. Thanks.

I love this dish and have made it a few times, but something that keeps getting me at the grocery store is that the ingredients list says sliced onions and I always forget until I'm cooking that that's supposed to be GREEN onions. I should know this by now, but I forget. Maybe you guys could fix it? :)

  • Chef Heather (Food on the Table)
Chef Heather (Food on the Table)

@Angela- You are right that this recipe is misleading as the original ingredients call for just onion and the directions call for green onions. Either type of onion actually would work in this recipe. If using yellow/white onion, I do suggest cooking it with the beef or vegetables. With this said, I have edited this recipe to be more clear and to show green onions in both the directions and ingredient list.

I've on occasion forgotten to get onions period and only remember when I'm in my kitchen making it. In a pinch I use chopped dried onions that are always in my spice rack. The dish still turns out great as the dry onions reconstituted (if that's the right term) adds just the right amount of flavor.
