This was quick and easy, although a bit on the bland side to me. I would add Italian sausage and make my sauce if I had the time. Great weeknight meal though!

Onions, garlic, and diced tomatoes also greatly add to the flavor profile of this casserole.

Perfect kid-friendly recipe! I used Ragu Robusto Roasted Garlic spaghetti sauce and Italian blend shredded cheese, and this turned out great - flavor a lot like cheese pizza, my kids loved it and my husband did too.

I used Hunts Chunky Vegetable spaghetti sauce. I didn't have mozzeralla on hand so I used cheddar and it was still great. I used mild pork sausage and loved it! Next time I am going to hide chopped broccoli in with the dish. It was a hit in our home too.

This was so easy and so tasty! I added a small can of sliced black olives and sweet Italian sausage, and used Barilla Plus Farfalle as well as a low-fat Italian Cheese blend. So yummy. My usually picky 8 year old had seconds. Unheard of!

It's hard to go wrong with pasta. If you don't have penne pasta some good substitutes are ziti (break into small pieces if in long form), rigatoni, elbow macaroni (use 1/3 less if measuring by volume) or fusilli. You may also substitute ground turkey, sausage (remove from casings or buy in bulk) or ground chicken for the beef in this recipe.

@Alan- Depending on your computer's internet settings you may need to 'temporarily allow pop ups' to be able to share this recipe on Facebook using the share button. You could also just copy and paste the recipe link. Does this help?

Yes, although my facebook page is full of different store brands and advertising because of going to various sites for stuff and the place making me "like" them first, then they put an ad on your facebook page. Anywho, I finally (I'm 64 and not good on computer) learned how to copy and paste so I will try that, but hopefully you guys will get the email place like all the other website food places, like taste of home, all recipes, even good housekeeping and such magazines, but i thank you very much for your help--------you have good recipes and stuff, otherwise i wouldn't even bother you.

This very good and hit with the family. I added onion (1 medium chopped) and a couple of chopped garlic cloves to the ground beef while browning for a little extra flavor.

Cheryl, maybe try adding some fresh garlic or onion, dried Italian seasoning, or some oregano. You'll have to keep us posted as to what you add to this dish!

I get home delivery from Schwan's food service, and one of the items I buy is a two-pack box of penne pasta, just heat in micro and go from there. The thing I like about this recipe is that, at least to me, it is good as it is. The other thing about all the various pasta's is that you can make all kinds of different things. Sometimes just heating the pasta and then adding something as simple as a clam chowder soup, maybe some carrots and or corn, etc. So, keep up the good work on the pasta recipes and hints, that's really using the old "noodle."

Does anyone else think that this dish is just plain old spaghetti just with a different name and size pasta? The dish was good none the less!

  • Chef Heather (Food on the Table)
Chef Heather (Food on the Table)

Hi Connie! Yes this recipe has similar ingredients to 'plain old spaghetti' but for many spaghetti is a weekly staple due to the fact that it is quick, easy, and inexpensive. This recipe is a way to change things up a bit. If you would like to change this recipe even more or dress in up some, use ground pork, turkey or chicken instead of ground beef, mix some ricotta cheese in with the mozzarella, add in some chopped veggies like onion, garlic, eggplant, zucchini or squash, or add some fresh or dried herbs like oregano, parsley, rosemary or thyme. You could even mix the jarred marinara sauce with some jarred Alfredo or pesto for a 'new' flavor.
