Ingredients

  • 4 flour tortillas
  • 1 (tablespoon) olive oil
  • 1/2 (teaspoon) ground cumin
  • 1/4 (teaspoon) cinnamon
  • 1/4 (teaspoon) salt
  • 1/2 (teaspoon) pepper
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 (tablespoon) fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 (pound) tilapia fillets
  • 2 (tablespoon) lime juice
  • 2 (cup) mixed greens
  • 1 chipotles in adobo sauce (minced and seeded)
  • 1 (cup) sour cream
  • 1/4 (teaspoon) salt

Directions

  1. Mix the chipotles, sour cream, and salt in a bowl to create the cream sauce and set aside.
  2. In a skillet set at medium-high heat, add the seven ingredients from the olive oil through the cilantro. Saute those ingredients for 5 minutes.
  3. After the 5 minutes, add the tilapia and cover and cook for 3 minutes or until fish is fully cooked. Then add in lime juice and let cook for 1 additional minute.
  4. Heat the tortillas according to the package instructions. Lay each of the warmed tortillas on a cutting board and place one-quarter of both the field greens and fish on the center of each tortilla. Then top each with equal amounts of the sauce.
  5. Fold the tortillas over to form tacos and serve.

The ingredients were good for the fish. A good change from blackening. The sauce was not so bueno.....even for someone used to hot food it was mucho caliente.

@Chris and Laura~ Hi this is Chef Heather from Food on the Table. That’s unfortunate that the sauce on this dish did not work out for you. A quick and easy “sauce” or “topping” that I like to use on tacos, and burritos is ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt and adding 1 teaspoon taco seasoning or chili powder. You can always add more or less of the seasoning as you prefer. Hope you will give these tacos another try!

This was really, really good. I got compliments from everyone who ate it. Better than some I've had in a restaurant.

This was fantastic. Tacos were even tasty enough without the adobo sauce!

Chef Heather - I have made recipes before that call for 1 chipotle in adobo sauce, as this recipe does. How do you store the rest that you don't use?

@Ann Marie~ Good question! What I do is put the chipotle peppers along with some of the chipotle sauce in my food processor and chop them up. I then place the chopped/pureed peppers into ice cube trays and freeze them. I also freeze any remainder sauce, since some recipes don't call for the actual pepper just the adobo sauce. Then I can pop out any peppers or sauce whenever I need them for future recipes.

Does this call for just one pepper? Oops, I used the whole can. Maybe others made the same mistake and that explains why it was too hot for some!

Wonderful recipe, instead of the sauce the recipe calls for, I mixed fat free sour cream, lemon juice and chopped cilantro... it was great!

@Ann Marie~ BTW one ice cube is about 1 pepper or 1 tablespoon.

@Kathy Waller~ I looked at the recipe again and can see how the wording of the directions and ingredients for the chipotle pepper is not very clear. It could read one whole can or one pepper. I think for this recipe only 1 or 2 of the actual peppers would be sufficient. I have modified this recipe to be clearer. As with any recipe you can add more or use less of the spice element to suit you and your family's needs. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Made this last night - very yummy! I do think that at least two peppers would be needed for such a large amount of sour cream. I put one in with an extra spoonful of the adobo sauce. I was surprised that I only had one piece of tilapia left, and it was just my husband and I eating it! Brought the leftover piece and sauce and plan to put over some leftover linguine for lunch at work today.

We really liked this recipe. I was hesitant about the cinnamon and was tempted to grab my taco seasoning but stuck with the spices as listed. For extra color & flavor I sprinkled the tilapia with some good chile powder. The chipotle sour cream mixture was delicious and the right amount of spice for us. I used 2 chiles and a little of the adobe and used the food processor to blend. This was easy and delightful. Hubby rated a 9 of 10 saying it needed more salt. He adde a little at the table and was happy!

This was my first recipe from this site!, my husband and I really liked it, but our 6-year-old son did not. Next time I will reserve a piece of fish for him and cook it plain in a different pan. I liked the sauce but my husband didn't even try it since he doesn't care for sour cream. So I won't bother with that next time.

My famly loved it. The 2 peppers with adobo sauce wasn't too hot even for my 7 yr old. I thought it might be so i saved some sour cream and added mild green chilis and we all liked the chipolte better - nice smokey flavor. No leftovers!

I thought it was good, but not the best fish tacos I had ever eaten. My husband wouldn't eat it after he first 3 bites. He didn't care for the cinnamon at all. I have to admit, while it was tolerable, I would have preferred it without the cinnamon. I like a more spicy fish taco.

It was fab! I didn't change a thing, the chipotle sauce is a must to make this dish really good. I did 2 peppers instead of one and it gave it a great zing! I mixed the leftover chipotle sauce with whipped cream cheese and poured my home made cranberry sauce over it for a great cracker dip!
