The Better Way To Plan Meals And Save Money

I know it's not even November yet but I can't help myself - I'm already planning for Thanksgiving! We usually have a set list of sides - sweet potato casserole, green beans, deviled eggs, stuffing (of course!) and homemade mashed potatoes. I thought it'd be fun to try something new this year. Any suggestions? What's your favorite dish? Personally, I could almost do without the turkey - I'm ALL about the sides (and, ahem, dessert).

My family always included a delicious 3-corn casserole. It's kind of like cornbread, except it includes whole kernel corn, creamed corn, and Jiffy mix (the 3 corns), along with ranch dip and some black pepper, all mixed and baked in a 9x9-inch casserole dish. It's not the healthiest food item, but it definitely brings some more flavor to the table!

Have you tried roasted brussel sprouts? They are so easy and they turn out almost like candy. Just cut them in half, sprinkle with sea salt and olive oil, and roast at 450 until tender. The skins will be a little brown, and I like them a little crunchy.

My husband would love that corn casserole! I have to admit I've never tried brussel sprouts, period. I guess I ought to, or I can't make my kids eat them, right? :)

For us, it's the Waldorf Salad, the sweet potatoes (sometimes with the marshmallows :) ). However, the pie is critical. Hmmm... there's a common thread here, isn't there.

What pies do you have & does anyone bake them?

I know Thanksgiving's a long way off for this year, but I couldn't help commenting, either! We usually always did all of the dishes Christi mentioned in the original post, plus stuffing, of course, and I usually made a cranberry bread pudding with whiskey sauce as one of the desserts. We also always did the corn casserole, though without the Ranch dressing (sour cream, instead). (The stuff really is good; a chef friend of mine was at one of our Thanksgiving suppers and was raving about it--he had no clue what a simple thing it was). maybe my favorite thing ever, though, was the turkey dish I made the year our babies were born, since it was just two of us eating--it was this incredible wild mushroom stuffed turkey breast with a cranberry coulis. Just amazing!! (I've actually made the coulis a number of times just as a sauce...) @Anon, I've heard of people making little individual stuffing muffins, but I'm intrigued since you call them "dressing balls." Is this actually something round, like little bites of something done in mini-muffin tins?

@Anonymous- I seen these stuffing or dressing balls made several different ways. Basically just make your favorite stuffing recipe and either shape into balls and bake in a large casserole dish at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until golden. Or you can use the muffin tin method and just scoop your favorite stuffing recipe into the muffin tins and bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. But here are two recipes from the Food on the Table site for 'stuffing balls.' Spinach Stuffing Balls: (http://www.foodonthetable.com/recipes/10542-spinach-stuffing-balls) OR Corn Stuffing Balls: (http://www.foodonthetable.com/recipes/206201-corn-stuffing-balls)

And here are a few stuffing recipes from the site that could easily be transformed into stuffing balls: Easy Sausage Stuffing: (http://www.foodonthetable.com/recipes/15728-easy-sausage-stuffing) OR Bacon Onion Cornbread Stuffing: (http://www.foodonthetable.com/recipes/170454-bacon-onion-cornbread-stuffing); OR Bread and Celery Stuffing (http://www.foodonthetable.com/recipes/18006-bread-and-celery-stuffing)

Thank you guys soooo much! These are round little balls of your dressing. This way all sides of balls get crunchie. Chef Heather, The last web site was what I was looking for. Thank you so much! Have a great day!

It is very similar to a pecan pie, it has raisins in it and just a few pecans, the filling is very similar to the pecan pie.

Thanks, Cathy. Almost sounds sort of like an English mincemeat pie! (Which I love...)
