I'd say baking at home is about $1.50 per loaf - it isn't that much less expensive when you factor in time to cook and drive to store to buy ingredients.

I'd don't know if you save money but it sure is tasty and satisfying to make your own bread. I use a baking stone - though they are expensive $50 they are worth it.

It's definitely cheaper than store-bought bread, especially if you're making something with whole grains and using any sort of nuts or wheat berries in the dough. I make a pretty basic white loaf for my son, but for sandwiches for us I just Googled around looking for 2-lb. loaf recipes and have had a lot of success. I buy my nuts, grain and berries in bulk and store them in the freezer so it's not a big deal for me to have to add a little at a time. The main thing is to make sure that you're using a recipe specifically for a bread machine. But even though it's a cost savings, the main reason I like making it at home is that I know we're not getting something full of preservatives...

I'd say its much cheaper to make at home! Theres so much you can make with it at home. I like a bread recipe by Jamie Oliver because then I can use it for not only loafs of bread but pizza, ect to. I also use the recipe that came with my mixmaster. Have fun. Explore the intenet. Be creative with your breads. You'll be so happy you did. And to save your arms on kneeding the bread mixmaster is awsome! I really need to try the baking stone cant wait!

I have a bread machine and try to use it at least once on the weekend -- besides the cost savings, I appreciate knowing that it's fresh and exactly what the ingredients are.
