How long can a frozen turkey be used?

One of the best ways for us to save money is to use food we already have. However, we're not sure whether we can use a frozen turkey we've had in our freezer for a few months. How long will it be good?

Alexia, did you ever find out or cook this bird? We have one from New Years and we're not sure whether to use it.

Hi, this is Chef Heather Hunsaker with Food on the Table:

Turkey uncooked and whole can be frozen up to 12 months.

Turkey uncooked and cut into parts up to 9 months and turkey precooked up to 4 months.

    thanks!

Just came across this while looking for some new turkey ideas, but with Thanksgiving coming up soon, it can't hurt to bump this thread. There will be plenty of turkey getting frozen a month from now, for sure!

That's for sure... and I have to write a reminder to myself to buy my turkey earlier this year than I usually do. The last few years I've waited too long, and all of the nicer medium-sized turkeys are gone--nothing but tiny ones and really huge ones left!

It's always a good idea to write the date on anything in your fridge or freezer. That way you KNOW it's still safe to eat. Also, remember when freezing things to get all the air out! It's the air that causes things to get freezer burned.
