The Better Way To Plan Meals And Save Money

Freezer meals for expectant mom?!

Please tell me about your favorite meals to make ahead and freeze! I've only got a couple weeks at most before baby #3 gets here, and I want the freezer stocked with real food so I don't have to worry about cooking right away. Thanks!

I'll be back later with a few recipes, but I wanted to post a quick hint before I forget. When I freeze ahead like this, I always use the same casserole dish, and I line the dish with foil before I assemble the dish. Then I freeze it, and when it's really frozen solid, I left out the foil-wrapped casserole, wrap it in another layer or even seal it in a food-saver bag, and I've got my casserole dish ready for the next dish. Then when it's time to actually cook the dish, I can just pop the food back into the original casserole dish and I'm ready to go. (The foil really cuts down on the clean-up, too.)

Hi Jess, great idea, I did this for both my pregnancies, it was so re-assuring! I used the website http://allrecipes.com/recipe/colettes-smoked-sausage-fritatta/detail.aspx to maake a month full of meals and freeze it. I also did this for a few months after the baby come when i went back to work. it really helped.

Dedicate one day a week to do all your cooking. For things like lasagna, enchiladas, or stuffed shells I like to buy those aluminum pans in bulk to use but to save money Barb's freezing tip is a good one. Also be sure to clearly label your food with the recipe name, date you placed it in the freezer, and reheating directions. I also like to keep a chart on my freezer with a list of all the meals, and other food in my freezer so I know what I need to use.

As far as meals pizza dough and toppings freeze beautifully! Also leftover pesto sauce or marinara sauce can be frozen in ice cube trays and be reheated on the stove top for a quick meal. And for meats like chicken, steaks, or pork pour your marinate over your meat before freezing. Then when you thaw your meat it will already be marinating.

Hamburger patties are another great freezer meal. Prepare your favorite hamburger recipe. Layer the raw patties in between pieces of waxed paper and stack in a freezer plastic bag. When ready to use take out and defrost in microwave for 2 minutes and then grill as normal.
