The Better Way To Plan Meals And Save Money

Just checked out your site today...there are no sides...I don't want to have to think about what I'm serving with a main dish. Maybe list several side dish suggestions that people could pick from.

Hi Tina! Thank you for your feedback! We actually have quite a few side dish recipes on the website. I encourage you to type "side dish" into the search box located at the top of this page to find them. If you had a specific side dish in mind try typing that specific word into the search box ie: "green beans" or "salad" or "rice". Also a number of our main dish recipes have side dish suggestions in the comment section. We always encourage users to share what side dishes they served with a favorite recipe to help others. If you ever stumble upon a recipe and are at a loss of side dishes to serve with it feel free to leave a comment and Chef Leslie or I will be more than happy to recommend something!

For any others who may be wondering about this, you can also go here http://www.foodonthetable.com/topics/courses and you'll see recipes that are organized according to category, as well as being able to search according to specific ingredients, as Chef Heather suggested. Hope that's a little extra help!

I think the OP is suggesting that the choices of sides should be added to the meal planning "wizard" that lets you select from the entree categories, as the next step before you create a shopping list. Start implementing this by adding side dish preferences to the user preferences, and limit the available choices by diet restrictions and pairing with the entree. The recommended meal should be a complete macronutrients balanced meal based on your preferred diet. Otherwise I still need to think quite a lot about my menu. Choosing the entree is the easy part of meal planning - getting a balanced meal and varying the diet is the hard part, and side dishes are the real key to this.

Yes, I apologize that we're not there yet--but we're making improvements and refining the site as quickly as we can, and in the meantime, we try to offer as much assistance as we can in terms of finding the dishes you're looking for.

Sorry, didn't mean to post yet... we do a lot of testing to see what our customers are looking for specifically, so to that end, some of you might also--however temporarily--see a version of the site that's somewhat different than what others see. This lets us figure out exactly how folks want to use the site, and how we can best improve it. Thanks for your patience!

A lot of their recipes are hearty enough to not need a side or just need something really simple, like a loaf of french bread with soups or pasta. I have yet to find a recipe that I think looks like it won't be enough food!

I agree with Tina and Paul that it would be a great asset to have a list of side dishes to choose from that go with the main course. Maybe even dessert selections too. Great site. Thanks.

For the site moderators, I couldn't agree more with adding side dishes into the wizard. I see the topical discussion which is a start, but it of course defeats the purpose of an all in one shopping list if it isn't included in the wizard. I LOVE this site. I understand new technologies take time to fully get there...but this is a critical core component in my view that should be a high priority for your dev team to keep the site truly as "one stop shop" as you need so the customers dont try other options. Thanks for providing such an awesome tool!!

I can't print out the recipes that on my menu. I tried printing from the page that shows the directions but I got 8 pages of other stuff on page & parts of the recipe on different pages. How can I print just the recipe? I just recently joined & so far I am pleased with your site.

I'm also trying to print out just the recipe. Please give further instructions. I also recently joined and like the category choices. The recipes look easy and have a minimal amount of ingredients to prepare a home-cooked meal that deliver rave reviews. Thanks!

you have several options. First, when you're finishing up your meal plan and are in the My Meal Plan tab, as you go through the steps (clicking the Next button), you'll get to a screen where you have various delivery options for your recipes and grocery list. You can select whether you want to print just recipes, just the grocery list, or have print both, have them sent to your iPhone, or have the list sent to your e-mail. Alternately, and I'll admit that I've done this occasionally when I'm not done planning but want something on paper as an easy reminder, I'll just copy and past the text of a recipe into a Word document and print quickly that way.

  • I have added meals to my "favorites" and to my "cookbook". But I can't find any place on the site that takes me to those things. It would be nice to have a page where I can have those saved recipes to pick from to add to my grocery list. Is this option available? I have looked over and over. Thanks!

Hi April and Anonymous! You can view all of your recipes if you go to 'meal plan' (at the top of this page) then click 'see all recipes' then 'my recipes' and then click on 'cookbook' 'history' etc.; you should see all of your recipes listed here. You can also view your favorite recipes and current meal plan by clicking your name located at the top of this page. Please let us know if you are still having trouble or have additional questions.

Hey not exactly sure where i should post this but just had a suggestion, this site would be even more helpful to me if i could imput what foods i have on hand and recipes would show up suggesting what i could cook with what i have on hand, now im new to this site, i havnt found this feature yet, but if you already do have this feature available, awesome! if not, it would be something really great and useful to add.

    April

I think The above suggestion is genious. (I too haven't found it on the site) I always try to establish what I have on hand and go from there. If you are on a budget as most of us are...this is the first step you should take. Then if you don't have an ingrediant you can decide if it's worth it to obtain it for that meal. Great Suggestion!!

well thanks i thought it might be helpful to many people on budgets (like me) and hope that someone in charge of this site sees the comment and somehow puts it in to effect, because i have looked around on other meal planning sites and they dont have this feature either! just makes sense to me and my family to plan my meals around what i already have on hand sometimes...

Chef Heather (Food on the Table)

Hi April and Anonymous! Thank you for sharing your comments and suggestions. I will pass them onto the proper folks. I know some recipe sites have a feature (like what you are suggesting) where you can 'plug in' 3 ingredients in your pantry and then recipes are suggested based on this information. While we don't have something specifically like that, at the moment, we do have a great search box (located at the top right hand corner of this screen) feature that will allow you to type in an ingredient you have and then find recipes that way. You could even type in two ingredients, such as broccoli + chicken and get recipes with both of these items. You can also search by specific ingredient by clicking on your store, in the yellow box on the right had side of this page. There you will see every sale item at your store and next to each of these items is an icon that says 'find recipes'. If you click on this then you will see every recipe on our site that has say 'ground beef'. Even though this is showing what is on sale, this is a great way to find recipes based on a specific ingredient if you already have it on hand. And as always if you are having difficultly finding a particular recipe you can always post a comment and we will be more than happy to help you!

Support was no help. They just said they know there is a problem. I want a refund. I have been a paying member for 3 weeks. It worked the first week and since then it is unable to get the sale items at the only grocery store chain I shop at. (Kroger.) It does not work. The add discussion button is gone because the service is broken and they do not want people to know this.

Christina, I'm sorry your feeling so frustrated, but as I said two days ago (even though my comment is only showing as posting yesterday), I was happy to cancel your account, and did so at that time. While you commented that you couldn't find a contact number for us, or support e-mail, you obviously realized a little later that all of our contact information is at the bottom of the page, if you scroll down. And e-mailing us did work for you; that's exactly what prompted my response on this board and triggered my canceling your account. (I say this so anyone else who may be having difficulty contacting Support will know how to do so.) But please know that your account was canceled when you requested it, and because you also commented on the board, I made sure to post here, as well, to acknowledge your request. If there's any other assistance we can give you, please let us know. Thanks!

I like this system. I just think it needs some programming effort to become a mature system. I am fine with the fee. It is reasonable and I save more than $10 a month by cooking and not eating out. I save more than that a week actually and the food is healthier because I can control the ingredients and cooking techniques. I think that "side dish" needs worked into the workflow. I have been a member for a couple of weeks now and it still says that my Giant Eagle store in Erie PA has nothing on sale. That doesn't make sense. I'd like a definite date as to when my local Giant Eagle store sales will be online for my savings in recipie use and guidance in selection. Thanks.

Uhoh, I just sent an email to cancel my account. Literally just signed up and paid about 20 minutes ago, I dont see a free trial option, but now that I see the actual site, it's not for me! Not sure why everyone had such a hard time with it..

I thought that this site would put together a meal plan for me complete with the weekly shopping list that is consolidated with recurring items that can be used throughout the week. If I wanted to pick and choose my recipes, I could just open a cookbook! And the recipes don't seem like they are very good either..

I think that the sales effort of the site should be modified if there is no plan in the works to fix the stores sales info (not even an ETA). During the purchase process, there was nothing that told me that I would not or even might not get the features that the site was selling (the sales process sells the discount information as a feature of the product being purchased). It let me select my store, all of it looked like it would work. If there is no plan to repair the site and actually sell customers what the company is advertising that the they are selling customers, then that is false advertising and is against the law.

That said, I still find the site worthy of being a member. I simply think that they should not advertise something that they are incapable of selling.
