Duplicating store-bought snacks at home

Both of my small sons always ask for Pirates Booty and Veggie Booty--they love the crunch and taste, but they could probably eat a whole bag (each!) by themselves every day, and even the small bags are almost $3.

Just on a whim, I decided to just offer them regular popcorn that I tossed with a little fresh-grated parmigiano and just a just of salt right after I took it off the heat, and they loved it. One of my guys only likes the Veggie Booty, though, so I was stumped about a replacement for him. I tried making kale chips but he didn't care for them (my husband did, though!). Then I remembered that years ago, when I first started making my own pasta, I used to get spinach powder to add in, and guess what... popcorn plus the spinach powder and a bit of salt makes a great Veggie Booty and costs way, way less!! (I add the powder before I pop the corn, too... the flavor seems to cook right in instead of just being an added seasoning.)

Dang! Love the creativity! Thats awsome! I miss the days of revamping store snacks lol. My best was the twinkie. I started cheating and just cut it down the middle to add a blob of frosting which was even better. All you have to do is add normal cake ingredients (flour, eggs, oil, sugar, ect. no color dyes or anything bad). Twinkie shapped pan or cupcake and have at it after baking and cooling.

Tortialla chips. tortillas cut into triangles. seperate them, put in fryer, fry away til done, maybe a few minutes. After they come out salt them (tostidos) cheese them (Doritos) Ranch them, ect. I also hear that if you put olive oil on them and put them in the oven that works to.

@Sandy~ Hi this is Chef Heather from Food on the Table. I always make my homemade 'healthier' tortilla chips in the oven! But here is my trick: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut tortillas into triangles. I then mix in whatever seasonings I feel like into the olive oil (or even sometimes melted butter). I like mixing in taco seasoning, ranch seasoning, a little garlic powder mixed with onion powder and chili powder, or for a sweet version some cinnamon and sugar. Then brush the tortillas with the spice olive oil mixture and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. I serve the savory ones with homemade dips or hummus and the cinnamon sugar ones with a fruit dip or flavored cream cheese!

Chef Heather, great idea on the tortillas! I know my boys would love the cinnamon/sugar ones, and I wouldn't even mind giving them as a treat since they get so little sugar otherwise--and I'm betting I could even dust my spinach powder on plain tortillas for a Veggie Booty-flavored version...

I've actually not seen the spinach powder in stores. I used to get mine online from King Arthur (lots of baking supplies), but they seemed to stop carrying it a while ago and I began using this place:

Of course, if you have a dehydrator , you could also just dry and pre-season your own and give it a spin in a spice grinder. (If I tried that, my guys would just be swiping the spinach from the dehydrator, I think...)

Kathleen... seriously, I can't stomach the stuff, myself!!! I love spinach pasta and spinach dishes, but it shocks me, too. One of my guys refuses to eat the cheesy white Pirates Booty, which I always loved... Anyway, it always took everything I had to swallow an occasional bite of "Green B," as they called it when they were little, because they would always offer me some and I didn't want to set a bad example by refusing it and saying I didn't like it. ;-) At least I can eat the version I make, since I hit it with a bit of salt and onion powder, too...
