Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And lately, it seems like everywhere you go, people are eating breakfast food for dinner. Have we finally started listening to the old adage, and are now making up for all the breakfasts we’ve skipped throughout the years? Is breakfast finally getting its due?
EcoSalon reports that we are indeed in the midst of a full-fledged “brinner” craze. And its not hard to see why: there isn’t a whole lot to dislike about breakfast. At breakfast, there is something for everyone. Fans of sweet treats can have pancakes, waffles, cinnamon rolls, or crepes, while those with a craving for richer foods can indulge in eggs benedict, omelettes, biscuits and gravy, or chicken fried steak. And of course, the health conscious among us can simply opt for fiber-filled oatmeal, a low-fat yogurt parfait, or a bowl of fresh fruit. Breakfast is truly an equal opportunity meal, so it makes sense that we all can occasionally enjoy breakfast food for dinner.
Breakfast For Dinner Menu
Does the thought of cooking breakfast after work ruffle your traditional sensibilities? Don’t worry, you can ease into breakfast foods for dinner slowly. The trick is to give traditional breakfast foods a different spin. After all, an egg breakfast sandwich is not much different than an egg sandwich you might make for yourself at lunchtime. For breakfast foods with a twist, try these combinations:
- Waffle Sandwich – Like its predecessor, the french-toast based Monte Cristo, the waffle sandwich is breakfast on the outside, lunch time on the inside. This breakfast-influenced sandwich can be made in many ways. Use waffles in place of bread, then use your imagination for what goes inside. Fried chicken strips? Steak and swiss? Peanut butter and jelly? Just like its white bread cousin, the waffle sandwich’s magic lies in its infinite possibility.
- Eggs – Though eggs pop up from time to time at lunch or during snack time, most of us usually take our egg in the morning. However, eggs are a great canvas for a balanced meal at any time of day. They are already loaded with protein, so all you need to add is some vegetables and serve on a whole grain and you’re good to go. But if you are really serious about protein, just throw some in a scramble. Beans, tofu, ham, bacon, sausage, and shredded chicken were basically made for eggs. EcoSalon even suggests serving egg on pizza.
- Crepes – Crepes are another example of how breakfast is equally delicious done savory or sweet. These thin eggy treats can wrap up honey and whipped cream with berries just as easily as hold together a re-imagined dinner course. Asparagus chicken crepes? Crepes with cheese and broccoli? Breakfast food for dinner suddenly doesn’t sound so crazy!
Whatever your feelings are about the advantages of eating breakfast, there is no doubt that these foods are delicious any time of day. But sadly, eating breakfast for dinner doesn’t excuse you from eating a real breakfast. A nutritious meal in the morning is the best way to start your day right.
