There are so many reasons to love pizza night. It’s quick, easy and something the whole family can agree on. But picking up the phone to have it delivered can be overpriced, and picking up the frozen kind to bring home can be under flavored. If you find yourself considering either of these options, consider making your own. If homemade pizza isn’t something you usually go for, here are two reasons to give it a try the next time someone in your family declares pizza night.
1. Spend less
Simply put, homemade pizza costs less. For the price of a medium cheese pizza delivered from the nearby pizza chain, you could make several tasty pies full of flavor right in your oven. Even if you prefer buying premade crust and tomato sauce to save on a little time and effort, you’ll still come out saving money. And the larger your family, the more savings you’ll get. Ordering two or three large pizzas for delivery, throwing in some toppings, and calculating the taxes and the tip can quickly add up and make you hesitant to splurge on pizza night for at least another month. When you choose to make it at home, you can easily make it a weekly tradition the whole family looks forward to.
2. Control more
The beauty of making pizza at home is having more control over the taste, size and health of the final product. The crust, sauce, cheese and toppings are all up to you. For the sauce, choose between a tasty homemade pizza sauce, the store-bought version or a jar of flavored spaghetti sauce. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the toppings. To save extra, choose vegetables that are in season and use leftovers, like extra meat or veggies, to chop up and throw on. If your family has different tastes, let everyone choose a part of the pizza to decorate the way they want. A few slices can be just cheese, while a few more are veggies only and the rest is fully loaded. If you’re looking for a healthy pizza, make it a thin crust, choose low-fat cheese and load it with the healthy toppings of your choosing. The options you have to create your custom pizza are endless.

We’ve been making whole wheat pizza crusts for several years. Topping depend on what we have and want
It’s so nice to put on what we want, vs. trying to tell the pizza people how to split it up.
My two teen sons volunteered to make pizza for 12 people when my sister comes to visit! That is from SCRATCH, complete with milling the whole wheat flour themselves!
We are all about making homemade vs. buying whenever possible…especially when it’s a no-brainer regarding 1.) avoiding processed 2.) quality of basic ingredients 3.) saving money I work full time and believe me, I don’t have a lot of extra time but I prep ahead and save homemade pizza night for Friday or Saturday nights when we can have a “slighter” later dinner hour and I don’t feel so rushed. I just made it tonight – it’s actually cooling! Olive Oil artisan dough crust with rosemary & oregano, sliced in-season tomatoes, sliced fresh mozzarella, crushed garlic. YUM
